Rafa Reis abre con victoria y liderato en casa la Volta a Portugal

Inmejorable comienzo de Volta a Portugal para los intereses de Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. El luso Rafa Reis logró en Setúbal el triunfo en el explosivo prólogo de 1,8 km con el que se abría semana y media de competición en la Grandísima, una de las carreras con mayor mística y tradición en el circuito ciclista continental. Reis marcó un registró de 2’18», superando a su compatriota Martingil (Liberty Seguros) y al danés Bendixen (Team Coop).

Un triunfo muy especial para Rafa, no sólo porque significa vestir el maillot de líder de Volta a Portugal, honor del que ya disfrutó hace dos temporadas con la victoria en esta misma especial de la ronda lusa, sino por el lugar donde ha llegado: su Setúbal natal. El ciclista de Caja Rural-Seguros RGA ha logrado su segundo éxito de esta temporada -sexto del equipo- rodeado de familiares y amigos, rodando a más de 180 pulsaciones por calles que conoce desde niño.

Rafa Reis: «Ganar aquí en Setúbal junto a mi familia y amigos es una sensación única, muy gratificante. Era mi gran objetivo y haberlo hecho la verdad es que me deja sin palabras. A partir de mañana toca defender la camisola amarela e intentar retenerla lo máximo posible, teniendo en cuenta que tenemos un equipo con buenos escaladores y trabajaremos para que ellos puedan dar el máximo en su terreno. Mi especialidad son las contrarreloj y por suerte he podido vencer hoy, pero la Volta no termina aquí. He entrenado en montaña y espero poder hacer un buen trabajo para que el equipo Caja Rural-Seguros RGA siga brillando en esta carrera».

El pelotón afronta este jueves la primera jornada en línea de la Grandísima, sobre un recorrido de 191 km entre Alcácer do Sal y Albufeira, cerca de la costa del Algarve, donde el calor será la principal amenaza antes de una previsible llegada masiva.

The Portuguese Rafa Reis achieved in Setúbal the triumph in the explosive prologue of 1.8 km which opened a week and a half of competition in the Grandisima, one of the most mystical and traditional competitions in the European cycling circuit. Reis stopped the clock at 2’18″, beating Martingil (Liberty Seguros) and the Danish Bendixen (Team Coop).

This is a very special triumph for Rafa, not only for wearing again the Volta leader’s jersey, an honor he already enjoyed two seasons ago with the victory in the same stage of the Portuguese round, but for the place where it has arrived: his home town. The Caja Rural-Seguros RGA cyclist has achieved his second success this season – the team’s sixth – surrounded by family and friends, on the streets he has known since childhood.

Rafa Reis: For me it is a unique and very rewarding sensation winning here in Setúbal with my family and friends. It was my great goal, so this victory leaves me speechless. Now it’s time to defend the yellow jersey and try to keep it as much as possible, taking into account that we have a team with good climbers and we will try they can do their best in their terrain. My specialty is the time trials and luckily I was able to win today, but the Volta does not end here. I have trained my mountain skills and I hope I can do a good job, helping my team to shine in this beautiful race.

The riders faces on Thursday the first stage of the Grandisima, on a route of 191 km between Alcácer do Sal and Albufeira, near the Algarve coast, where the heat will be the main threat before a more than likely sprint.
