Exhibición de Oier Lazkano en Volta a Portugal

Siendo él, sólo podía hacerlo a lo grande, rematando una larga escapada en solitario de más de 55 kilómetros, en un terreno para nada sencillo, repleto de pequeñas subidas hasta la misma línea de meta en Viseu. Oier Lazkano estreno su palmarés profesional este miércoles en la tercera jornada en línea de la Volta a Portugal, una etapa a todo gas desde salida, con múltiples intentos de fuga que nunca obtuvieron el visto bueno del pelotón.

Parecía que se marcharía un movimiento de ocho hombres con doble representación de Caja Rural-Seguros RGA (Sergio Martín y Jon Irisarri), pero el gran grupo se echó encima en el ascenso a Lamego, todavía muy lejos del final de etapa. Desde ese punto se sucedieron los ataques, en un continuo festival en el que el vitoriano de sólo 20 años se sintió en su hábitat natural.

Lazkano abrió hueco a unos 55 kilómetros de la llegada. A su espalda, perseguían cuatro corredores a más de 2 minutos que acabarían siendo atrapados por un pelotón que jamás arrojó la toalla. Los equipos se fueron sucediendo en cabeza, pero el ciclista vasco resistía todos los envites sobre un terreno que apenas le ofrecía respiro. Martín volvió a aparecer para soldarse a rueda de un cuarteto peligroso con Delaplace, Brown y Canal, que acercó la diferencia al minuto pero que también sería engullido.

El pelotón redobló su esfuerzo en los últimos 10 kilómetros, aunque Lazkano, con todo lo que le quedaba, consiguió cruzar la pancarta de los últimos 200 metros con tiempo suficiente para mirar atrás y darse cuenta de que la victoria no se iba a escapar, la cuarta de la temporada para Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.

Oier Lazkano: «Iba pensando que tenía que seguir hasta donde llegara, hasta donde llegara, hasta donde llegara… y he llegado hasta meta. No hay días de transición en la Vuelta a Portugal, aquí se va todo el día muy rápido. Ayer fue una etapa muy dura, no tenía mis mejores piernas y llegué en la grupeta guardando fuerzas, porque nunca sabes cuando puede ser tu día. Hoy me he visto bien y he conseguido llegar».

«Cuando vi el recorrido, pensé que ésta podía ser una buena etapa para mí, sobre todo por los repechos finales. No me encontré muy bien durante los primeros días pero hoy me he sentido muy bien. He intentado estar a todos los ataques donde hubiera un Porto o un Efapel y al final he conseguido irme con otros cuatro, pero había falta de entendimiento y he decidido irme solo. No lo he dado por hecho hasta que he cruzado la meta. Ha sido un año muy raro y lo de hoy es la culminación a todo el trabajo de abril, mayo y todos esos meses».

Oier Lazkano premiered his professional record this Wednesday on the third stage of the Volta a Portugal. It was a very hard day from the start, with multiple attempts that never obtained the approval of the bunch.

It seemed that an eight-man movement with two Caja Rural-Seguros RGA (Sergio Martín and Jon Irisarri) would leave, but the large group catched them in the ascent to Lamego, still far from the end. From that point, the attacks didn’t stop in a continuous festival where the 20-year-old from Vitoria felt himself very comfortable.

Lazkano opened a gap about 55 kilometers from the finish. Behind him, four riders tried to hunt him but they bunch finished with their attempt. The bunch kept pushing but the Basque rider resisted all the stakes on a terrain that barely offered him a rest. Martín reappeared to join a dangerous quartet with Delaplace, Brown and Canal that down the difference to the minute but they would also be swallowed.

The bunch redoubled its effort in the last 10 kilometers, although Lazkano, with everything he had left, managed to cross the banner of the last 200 meters with enough time to look back and realize that victory was not going to escape, the fourth of the season for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.

Oier Lazkano: «I was thinking that I had to continue as far as I would go, as far as I would go, as far as I would go … and I have reached the finish line. There are no transition days in the Tour of Portugal, here the whole day everybody goes very fast. Yesterday was a very tough stage, I did not have my best legs and I arrived in the group saving strength, because you never know when your day might be».

«When I saw the route, I thought this could be a good stage for me, especially because of the final slopes. I did not feel very well during the first days but today I felt very good. I tried to be at all the attacks where there was a Porto or an Efapel and in the end I managed to leave with four others, but there was a lack of understanding and I decided to go alone. I have not taken it for granted until I have crossed the finish line. It has been a very strange year and today is the culmination of all the work of April, May and all those months. «
